I took the photos in 1999 - the area looks completely different these days: new houses, new streets, shopping malls, parks and beaches: a favorite place for the "young creatives"!

In 1999 our neighbors where simple working class - mostly latinos and afro americans, friendly, curious but helpful, sitting in their (old) cars and listening to their (loud) music, in one hand a beer can. The best for shopping was not far away atlantic avenue, in parts a kind of oriental bazaar with shops taken over 1:1 from near and middle east. Plus a 24 hours super market.

What I want to say: red hook was a good place to live.
